Updated advice on oral isotretinoin for young people

We have updated our information leaflet for young people on oral isotretinoin, which is used to treat severe acne, to reflect the latest safety guidance and patient information. The revised leaflet includes a link to watch a new educational video designed to help young people make informed decisions about their treatment.

Medicines for Children has updated its patient information leaflet for young people taking oral isotretinoin – also known by the brand names Roaccutane, Reticutan and Accutane.

The update follows changes to prescribing guidance and safety information introduced after a review by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the Commission on Human Medicines. The review recommended additional measures to support the safe use of isotretinoin, including strengthened information about potential mental health and sexual side effects, ongoing monitoring requirements, and additional safeguards for people under 18 years of age.

As part of these changes, educational resources available to patients have also been updated. Our revised leaflet now includes information about the patient education video that young people may be asked to watch before starting treatment.

Oral isotretinoin is an effective treatment for severe acne when it has not responded to other treatments, but it is important that patients and families understand both the benefits and the potential risks associated with the medicine. The updated leaflet reflects the latest safety recommendations and helps ensure that young people have access to clear, up-to-date information to support informed treatment decision making.
