Medicines and maintaining healthy teeth

November 2, 2017

Medicines for Children has developed a new information leaflet about how to maintain healthy teeth when taking medicines. This leaflet has been produced to coincide with Sugar Awareness Week (30th October to 5th November 2017).

Although medicines contain only small amounts of sugar and are unlikely to have harmful effects on your child’s teeth, this leaflet gives practical advice to minimise the risk of tooth decay from liquid medicines. It also explains how to help your child if they have ‘dry mouth’ as a side-effect of a medicine, as lack of saliva can increase the risk of tooth decay.

The new information leaflet is available to view online or download in PDF format: Medicines and maintaining healthy teeth.

Sugar Awareness Week, run by Action on Sugar, aims to increase public awareness of hidden sugars in food and drinks, enabling you to make informed healthy choices about what you eat in order to reduce your sugar intake. You can read more here: www.actiononsugar.org.

Many thanks to Dr Martin Edwards, Consultant Paediatrician at the Children’s Hospital for Wales for developing the content for this information leaflet.
