Supporting conversations about medicines with healthcare professionals

We have developed a new resource for parents and carers to aid meaningful conversations with healthcare professionals about your child's medicines. Our new help sheet suggests questions that you might want to ask at your next appointment.

When your child is prescribed a new medicine, there can be a lot of information to take in, especially if your child has also been given a new diagnosis. Often, we might not know what to ask, or we may think of questions to ask after the appointment has finished.

Medicines for Children has developed a new resource for parents and carers to help them to have meaningful conversations with healthcare professionals about medicines. Our help sheet, which is available to view/download at the bottom of this page, suggests questions that you might want to ask at your next appointment. You might want to understand more about how a medicine works, why it has been prescribed, any possible side effects, how long it takes to work, how to give it correctly, or what to do if it doesn’t seem to be working.

The Medicines for Children website provides information on more than 200 medicines that are given to children. This information will answer many questions. However, sometimes we want someone to explain information to us, or to have a discussion about a treatment choice. You can print the new help sheet out to help you remember questions you want to ask and to take notes, or have it ready to read on your phone during a conversation.
