Being aware of antibiotics

November 16, 2012

Sunday 16 November is European Antibiotics Awareness Day. This event
aims to raise awareness on how to use antibiotics in a responsible way that will
help keep them effective for the future.

Antibiotics only kill bacteria – they do not kill viruses. This means that they do not work against colds, sore throats, flu or other infections that are caused by viruses.

If your child is prescribed an antibiotic for a bacterial infection, it is important that they take this medicine in the way that your doctor has told you to so that it gets rid of, or prevents, the infection.
