*Page under development* Medicines passports to support children with learning disabilities

In support of the STOMP-STAMP campaign, we are working with UK paediatricians and pharmacists to support families to help prevent the over medication of children and young people.

Parents and carers of children with learning disabilities understand that their child may require several regular medications to help manage their condition(s). In the majority of circumstances, parents and carers are expected to manage their children’s multiple medications, whilst administering their medicine.

A medicine passport allows the user (parent/carer) to record their child’s medicines and other key medical information in a pocket size booklet easy to carry across care settings to ensure accurate transfer of information.

Information can include:

  • Preferences to medication including brand, taste, packaging
  • Method preference for taking medication (e.g. tablets, capsules, injections etc.)
  • How to communicate with the child

Having a detailed passport-style document for your child with their medications, routines and needs can be really useful for healthcare and hospital appointments as well as after school activities or emergencies.

If the child is non-verbal, the medicine passport can be an excellent communication tool, that outlines the child’s preferences to medication and other needs.

These resources are ready to download and make tracking your children’s routine a lot easier, and will help you become more informed around their care.

Collaborating with healthcare professionals within the NHS to create resources for parents/carers and health professionals involved in your child’s long term care.
